Resource Consents

We undertake a variety of land development (land use and subdivision), coastal and resource consent work. This includes preparing Assessment of Environment Effects (AEE) and lodging resource consent applications across New Zealand.

So what is a resource consent? It’s the approval you need for such things as the use or subdivision of land, the taking of water, the discharge of contaminants, or the use or occupation of coastal space. Whether you’re building something new or just making alterations, resource consent may be required. A new use of an existing building could also require a resource consent, e.g. the conversion of a residential house to a restaurant.

The need for resource consents varies from one area to another, just as council plans vary. If what you have in mind isn’t clearly identified as either a permitted or prohibited activity, then a resource consent will be required. For those who need certainty, councils can confirm that the activity can be or is lawfully established through issuing certificates of compliance.
